What a swarm actually is
A termite swarm is a mature colony releasing winged reproductives ("alates") to fly out, mate, and establish new colonies elsewhere. Seeing one means there is an established, mature colony nearby — either in your property or close to it.
When swarms typically happen
Swarming is usually triggered by specific temperature and humidity conditions, often after rain following a warm spell, and typically happens in the early evening or around light sources, which is when most people actually notice them indoors.
Why a swarm indoors is more significant than one outdoors
A swarm seen outside, away from the house, may simply indicate colonies in the general area. A swarm occurring inside the house, however, strongly suggests the colony is already established within the structure itself, not just nearby.
What to do if you see one
Do not simply clean up the discarded wings and move on — note where you saw them and get an inspection booked. A swarm is one of the clearest signals of an active, mature colony that needs professional attention.
